In Memory Of When I Cared

This is a poem

Written in memory of when

I used to care

When I thought that wearing the right clothes

And having the right hair

And conforming to the latest trends

Was the only way of making friends

I believed the key to fitting in

Was blending in

Because all the other people in my school

Looked the same

This is a poem

Written in memory of when

I used to care

What people thought of me

Afraid to speak my mind

To be seen as different

To be myself

I didn’t see it then

That my individuality

Was the most important thing about me

No more

I will not sacrifice honesty

Or my own personality

For the sake of conformity

Or popularity
