Whispers

I hear whispers in the dark

Though I never see the mouths

From which they emanate

As though the shadows themselves

Are trying to communicate

Or some unseen entity

A phantom, ghost or deity

With a message I must hear

Or perhaps it’s my imagination

Playing tricks on me

I will likely never know

Because I am too afraid to look

Not through fear of what I may find

Lurking in the shadows

But the fear of what I may not

I would sooner there be monsters

Hiding in the darkness

Than the whispers I have come to dread

Be from the voices in my head
